Northern Minnesota Resort History

This Northern Minnesota Resort was purchased in 1948, by a fashion model and professional photographer leaving Chicago city life behind.  They packed up their two year old son and moved to a  cabin vacation property at the end of a two-rut road in northern Minnesota.

During several decades, Helen and Bob Kohl developed this property on Big Turtle Lake (one of a chain of 5 lakes) into one of the areas finest resorts, Kohl’s Last Resort.  People came from all over for the grill and Helen’s baked pies.  In the late 70’s, Rex and Kurt Kohl took the resort over from their parents. They added new Colorado style, 8 sided mini homes on the property, along with building a lodge with an indoor pool, sauna, Jacuzzi, and laundry facilities.

The Minnesota  resort has changed hands a couple of times until 2000.  Ron Mason of Iowa purchased the property and gave it a proper facelift inside and out. He built a 4 unit villa along with a large family reunion cabin. He remodeled the pool and built a much loved outdoor jacuzzi tub.

Jim, Debbie, and Aaron Eickhors purchased Kohl’s Resort in 2004.  In our past lives, we were former Landscapers and Campground owners.  Now, we are proud owners of this Classic Minnesota Resort with training as jet boat drivers, Medallion Hunt Specialists, Minnow Race Referees, and more – and loving it!  We have worked diligently, operating the resort while updating and providing deluxe guest accommodations.  Adding four cabins to the resort while remodeling existing cabins, the resort continues to grow and beautify. We find joy in providing guests with new experiences that last a lifetime.  Kohl’s Resort has the charm of a mom & pop place while providing the comforts and activities of larger resorts.  Our story continues…
